Coventry is situated just outside Birmingham in the West Midlands and is the 9th largest city in the UK and 2nd largest in the Midlands with a population of around 310,000. The city was founded in 1043 by the Earl of Mercia and is thought that Coventry grew from a Bronze Age settlement, having a good climate and woods and forest for raw materials and a source of food. Coventry was well known in the 18th and 19th Century for its watch and clock manufactures.
In around 1870 the first ever English bicycle, the ‘Ariel’, was made in Coventry. The city of Coventry was the only city in the Second World War to have its cathedral destroyed during the Blitz.
Today the M6 motorway will lead you to Northern Coventry with surrounding areas like Leamington Spa, Warwick, Rugby, Nuneaton and Kenilworth.
