History

Now known as Italy was once known as Ancient Rome and founded in around the 8th century BC. Over centuries it grew into the Roman Empire famously known for its Caesars. Emperor Augustus ruled at around 27 BC for 46 years and the month of August is derived from this great leader. The empire broke down around 285 AD and became two parts. There was the Western Roman Empire in the west and the Byzantine Empire in the East. Over time of around 14 centuries the west separated into small independent regions leaving the east as a whole area as it was formed.

Moving on to the middle ages and Italy was once again divided into small like cities. These were as follows: - Republic of Florence along with Papal States in the centre, the Genoese and the Milanese around the north, the Venetians in the east and the Kingdom of Naples in the South.

Culture

Italy is also famous for many great artists like Michelangelo who was the sculptor of 'David' which was a symbol of the Italian renaissance. Leoarnado Davinci with his infamous painting of the Mona Lisa the leaning tower of Pisa that is in the city of Pisa famous for standing tall since 1173 and being placed under poorly laid foundation upon construction and Italian food from the world renowned Pizza to spaghetti Bolognese and lasagne.
