Austria's official name is the 'Republic of Austria'. Its shares borders with Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy and Switzerland. Austria is known for its mountain range called the Alps. The country hosted the winter Olympics in 1950 and is commonly known for their success of all major winter sports. The people in Austria speak different languages from German (official nationwide), Slovene, Croatian and Hungarian. In 2006 Austrian public protesters campaigned for the closer of the Temelin nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic resulting in a parliamentary motion threatening international legal action.

Austria is the only country that is part of the EU but not part of NATO. The countries flag is one of the oldest flag in history going back to 1191. One of Hollywood's most famous actors was born in Austria – Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is now the Governor of California.
